WBFSH 30th Anniversary Interview: Lynne Crowden of the Woodlander Stud

WBFSH 30th Anniversary Interview: Lynne Crowden of the Woodlander Stud
The latest interview in the WBFSH World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses anniversary series with Lynne Crowden of the Woodlander Stud in the UK.

Originally a breeder of thoroughbreds, she is a strong believer in line-breeding, and focusing on the dam line.

She has taken these philosophies with her into dressage breeding, and has excelled at producing horses of international quality.

Perhaps most famous is the striking chestnut mare Woodlander Farouche (by Fürst Heinrich), double Dressage World Breeding Championship Gold Medallist.

Her dam Dornröschen (by Dimaggio), who has given Lynne 4 licensed stallions, was awarded Mare of the Year in 2022, and after a successful sport and breeding career, is now enjoying her retirement.

Should we breed horses that can be ridden without spurs & whips

Should we breed horses that can be ridden without spurs & whips
Breeding horses that can be ridden without spurs and whips is an approach that prioritizes the well-being of the animals and aligns with ethical considerations. Here are several points to consider regarding this approach:

Animal Welfare :
The primary motivation for breeding horses that do not require spurs and whips is to enhance their welfare. Spurs and whips can cause pain and stress to horses, and minimizing their use would lead to better treatment of these animals.

Why Horses Are Whipped :
Horses are often whipped to encourage them to run faster or to correct their behavior. However, research and expert opinions suggest that whipping hurts horses. Professor Paul McGreevy, a renowned equine behaviorist, noted that horses have robust yet sensitive skin designed to respond to touch from flying insects or other horses. This sensitivity implies that horses likely feel as much pain as humans would when whipped.

Breeding Guidelines in the Hanoverian Horse

Hanoverian Horse Logo

For a few years now the Hanoverian association in Germany has formulated guidelines for planning and realizing strategic goals. These guidelines describe the course of a decision process and, at the same time, they serve as a foundation for a discussion on how to realize definite measures. The international and national expansion of the association was prepared in accordance with this method.

Departmental heads of the association define these guidelines in cooperation with the executive board. The discussion about how to formulate the guidelines has already proven helpful. All involved parties share from which angle they view the issue. The result of this mutual understanding is that all parties speak a uniform language when discussing the strategic goals. Until now this method has only been applied to structural goal setting and marketing question. Because of the positive experiences this system will now also be applied to breeding issues.

Evaluation of Stallions Based on Linear Description of Their Daughters

The purpose of our work was an objective evaluation of mares of the Czech warmblood horse based on the linear description, as well as the evaluation of the benefits of stallion breeding based on the linear description of their daughters and – for specific stallions – the evaluation of certain individual exterior traits which are passed on by stallions to their offspring.

Stallion horses with at least 7 descendants were used for the evaluation and determination of the values, mares which underwent a linear description of traits at the age of 3 years. For this evaluation we used available data from the year 1996 to 2012, a total including 251 stallions and 4709 mares and more than 500 000 records related to the linear description.

The data was gathered from the database of the Central Register of Horse Breeding at Slatiñany in the Czech Republic. These data were manually compiled using Excel 2007 and then processed and evaluated according to the objectives of the... More

Evaluation of the Exterior of Sport Horses

judging hanoverian horses

The evaluation of the exterior of horses has always played a significant role in the breeding. It presents valuable conclusions about the quality and the use already in young horses and thus gives an indication on the value of the horse (and its offspring) as a riding horse in the respective disciplines.

Evaluating horses is not exactly a science. Criteria on how a good riding horse should be constructed were developed through the experience of many generations of horse experts. This manifests the absence of an ulterior motive in the evaluation of horses. We clearly strive to breed a typy horse, however the evaluation of the exterior focuses on the functionality of a horse more so than on its beauty.

The Hannoveraner Verband divides the evaluation of broodmares and stallions into six exterior components, all of which are scored between 1 (very bad) and 10 (excellent). The components are the head, neck, saddle... More
